The building that ultimately became Eibands Luxury Condominiums has enjoyed a long and interesting history since its construction in the mid-1850s. While many events have shaped its past, the defining moment in its history was the founding of the Garbade, Eibands & Co. dry goods store in our present location by a pair of enterprising Texans and its subsequent expansion into the premier dry goods and department store of the entire region.
Henry A. Eiband and business partner Henry Garbade were textbook examples of the confident entrepreneurship, creative drive and business acumen that seemed to thrive in those days. Along with other family members and business associates, Henry A. Eiband made the most of the opportunities for commercial success that Galveston offered. He went on to become an integral part not only of the business community but of the the vibrant social fabric of Galveston in those years until his death in 1936.
What is offered here is just a small slice of the Eibands story, but sufficient to present any interested viewer with a clear picture of the essential role that the Eiband business, and family, played throughout the years. We at Eibands Luxury Condominiums are proud to be able to preserve the name, and the architectural heritage, of this titan of the Golden Age of Galveston.
